Skiing in Grosser Arber, in the Bayerischer Wald.

We finally made our skiing day trip to Bavaria's beautiful Bayerischer Wald. The trees looked magical with their winter coats of snow on! After having to revisit the garage again our car made the just under 3 hour journey to Grosser Arber.

Everyone was well apart from me who unfortunately succumbed to a stomach bug as the day progressed, which rather hindered my attempts to learn to ski. However I did struggle through an hour 1:1 lesson  to be introduced to how to move on Skis, stopping was harder (snow plough technique) and I fell over a few times! No pictures of that I'm afraid!

The children had a 2 hour lesson and seemed to get on quite well in the end. During this Pete (who of course can ski already!)_ had the chance to go for 2 runs down the nearest proper ski slope, before having to support the children practising!

It was tiring work, especially difficult in ski boots that seem to project you forward onto your toes! So there were a few food breaks..

By the end of the day when I'd unfortunately had to retire to the car everyone  one was getting the hang of it!Travelling up the 'Magic Carpet' travelator to have another go. The Kinderland area for children was good for this.

PS. Now next time shall I just sit in the cafe, take photos and watch , or have another go?

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Having been cooped up ill over the Fasching weekend we decided to venture out yesterday (Faschingsdienstag).
We had about an hours drive to the medieval walled town of Rothenburg. It was bitterly cold, but we managed to look around some of the town , visit the Doll and Toy museum (Puppen und Spielzeugmuseum) and sample a very over-rated 'snowball' pastry (Schneeball).

Fasching

In Germany Fasching or Carnival is a big celebration.

Children have to wear colourful costumes to school and Kindergarten to celebrate and have a party before the Lenten Fast...

Jemima also had a party at her new Ballet School....

All 3 children had to dress up on Friday to go to school or Kindergarten
